Abstract

976,351. Printing surfaces. KOCH PROCESSES Ltd. Feb. 14, 1961 [Feb. 24, 1960]. No. 6522/60. Heading B6C. A method of making a cylindrical printing forme comprises the steps of applying a solvent to a surface of a cylindrical member of a material soluble in the solvent whereby a surface layer of the member is softened, pressing into the surface layer a die constituting a negative of the forme to be made, and drying out the solvent from the surface layer. The die is formed on a metal plate 14 by a known photo-mechanical process involving the use of a gelatine layer made light-sensitive by ammonium dichromate. The leading edge of the plate 14 is fed into the nip of a pair of rollers 16, 17 above which the plate and sheet are separated so as to form a V-shaped channel 18 into which solvent is fed by a pipe 19, the roller 16 being made of P.V.C. constituting the cylindrical member. The solvent is cyclohexanone. The rollers are rotated so as to feed the plate between them, the pattern on the plate 14 being impressed in the roller 16 in the process. The solvent is then dried out of the cylindrical, roller, with the aid of a current of warm air if necessary. In a modification the plate 14 may be omitted, the negative die being formed on the surface of the roller 17. According to the Provisional Specification the process may be applied to making a flat forme.
