Abstract

<PICT:0976327/C1/1> <PICT:0976327/C1/2> Articles, e.g. pipes, angle irons, structural members and flat articles, are subjected to a centripetal jet of coating material while passing through a port of the coating chamber, a continuous flow of air into the chamber being maintained during the coating, e.g. by reducing the pressure. The article may be passed, while rotating, through the chamber or dipped into the chamber. The article may be precleaned, preheated, heated in the coating chamber and postheated (e.g. heating by induction). The coating material may be thermo-adhesive, e.g. epoxy resin, phenol-formaldehyde resin, polyethylene or enamel, and woodflour, inorganic gait or talc may be applied with the thermo-adhesive material or applied subsequently to it. Other components which may be present in the coating material include isophthalyl dihydrazide, dicyandiamide, tris - (dimethyl-aminoethyl) phenol, alkyl ammonium bentonite, mica, and chrome oxide. In the case of pipes strip material, e.g. paper, is wound round the coated pipes. Faults in the coating may be detected by the occurrence of an arc discharge when the earthed coated article is passed through a circular conducting member to which a voltage is applied, and any blemishes in the coating may be removed by further spraying. As shown, coupled pipe lengths 10 and 11 are moved through cleaner B, heater C, coater D and cooler E. Chamber 19 of coater D is supplied with coating material by conduits 20 via manifolds 13 and 14 and annular orifices defined by ring members 15 and 16 and 17 and 18. Pump G withdraws air and excess coating material from chamber 19 via conduits 21 to conduit 22 from where excess coating material is returned with fresh material from conduit 23, to conduit 20 via conduit 24 by blower H.ALSO:A coating composition comprises a mixture of two epoxy resins, isophthalyl dihydroxide, dicyandiamide, tris (dimethylaminomethyl) phenol, alkyl ammonium bentonite, mica, and chrome oxide. Particle sizes are mentioned.
