Abstract

A polymerization process for the production of a synthetic rubber latex comprises polymerizing one or more monomers containing a vinyl group and which produce a synthetic rubber latex on polymerization in the presence of a surfactant, a polymerization initiator, and a sulphonated benzene derivative having at least one group of the formula -SO3M attached to the benzene ring wherein M represents a hydrogen atom or an alkali metal atom and with or without one or more alkyl groups of one to five carbon atoms attached to the benzene ring. The sulphonated benzene derivative may have two such -SO3M groups attached to the benzene ring and may be halogenated or nitro-substituted. A portion only of the sulphonated derivative and surfactant may be mixed with the monomers at the beginning of the reaction, the remainder being added during the polymerization. Specified monomers are butadiene and isoprene while styrene, acrylonitrile methyl methacrylate, vinyl pyridine or methylisopropenyl ketone may be copolymerized with the butadiene. Specified sulphonated benzene derivatives are sodium or potassium toluene (or xylene or cumene) sulphonates, m-nitro-benzene sulphonic acid, o- or p-chlorobenzene sulphonic acid and o- or p-bromobenzene sulphonic acid. The usual catalysts e.g. ammonium persulphate, alkali-metal persulphates, peroxides or hydro-peroxides, light and gamma-radiation may be used.
