Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:0975595/C1/1> wherein Ar is phenyl which may carry as sole substituent in the m-position a hydroxy, alkoxy, acyloxy, amino, acylamino or alkylamino group, each R is H or alkyl, R1 is alkyl, Q is methylene or ethylene, Y is carbonyl, ketalised carbonyl, hydroxymethylene or acyloxymethylene and the junction of the rings in trans. Such compounds -and those in which more generally Ar is phenyl having an ortho-position free of substituents and Y is carbonyl or hydroxymethylene or a derivative group convertible by hydrolysis into carbonyl or hydroxymethylene-are prepared by reducing the corresponding dehydro compound <FORM:0975595/C1/2> at the ethylene linkage with introduction of the hydrogen atom shows as H trans. to R1, as e.g. by catalytic hydrogenation. The examples describe the preparation of those compounds of the first formula wherein (a) R1 is methyl, R is H, Ar is m-methoxyphenyl, Y is carbonyl or hydroxymethylene and Q is methylene or ethylene by reduction and in the case of diketones by oxidation of the ketols; (b) R1 is methyl, R is H, Ar is phenyl, Y is carbonyl or ethylenedioxymethylene and Q is ethylene by reduction.
