Abstract

The invention comprises (1) compounds of formula <FORM:1103291/C2/1> wherein Z is an alkoxy, cycloalkoxy, aralkoxy or hydroxy group or a hydrogen atom, R1 is an alkyl group, Y is a methylene or ethylene group and n is an integer from 1 to 4, provided that when Y is methylene, n is 1 and Z is a hydroxy, alkoxy or aralkoxy group in the 3-position, R1 is methyl, and provided that when Y is ethylene, n is 1 and Z is an alkoxy or aralkoxy group, R1 is not an n-alkyl group of 2 to 4 carbon atoms, (11) their preparation by ethynylation of a corresponding 17-keto compound, followed if desired by hydrolysis to a 3-ol, and (111) conversion of the compounds of the invention, by reduction of the 17a -vinyl group, reduction of the 8(9) double bond, and a Birch reduction to a corresponding 3-etherified hydroxy - 17a - vinyl - estra - 2,5(10)dien - 17b -ol, followed if desired by treatment with an organic acid to form 17a -vinyl estr-5(10)-en-17b -ol-3-one and treatment of this with hydrochloric acid to form 17a -vinylestr-4-en-17b -ol-3-one. 3 - Methoxy - 17 - ethylidene - estra - 2,5(10) diene and 17 - ethylidene - estra - 1,3,5(10) trien-3-ol are obtained as by-products from the Birch reduction in (111) above. D 8-Estrone methyl ether is obtained by reduction of the corresponding D 8(9), 14(15) compound.
