An observation window 23 for a high vacuum furnace is connected to the furnace by a flat passageway 21 of small cross-section, Fig. 2. Gas at a low pressure is fed to a space 24 behind the window 23 so that sufficient gas molecules flow down the passage 21 to collide with any free vapour molecules travelling towards the window.
