Abstract

975,292. Making containers. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. Sept. 27, 1962 [Dec. 22, 1961], No. 36694/62. Heading B3A. A method of constructing single-walled containers of various capacities comprises fabricating tapered universal end shells corresponding to the respective top and bottom ends of a container and each having a standard maximum diameter and flange depth, fabricating a centre band with flange projections having the same diameter as the inner edges of said end shells, the centre band adapted for spacing and joining the end shells of a container and in which the axial length of the flanges of the band are varied so as to form with the end shells containers having different capacities. A container, preferably of stainless steel, comprises a convex shaped top end shell 12, a single walled chime 14 attached to the shell by welding, a bottom end shell 16 having an integrally formed doublewalled chime 18 and a centre band 20 joined to the end shells by welding. A tap fitting 28 is provided in the shell 12, the top of which is protected by a flanged portion 32 of the chime 14. Drainage holes 34 are provided at the intersection of the chime wall with the face of the end shell 12. The centre portion is preferably produced from stainless steel sheet formed into a band, cold rolled and stretched to form flat rolling surfaces 40, corrugations 42, an intermediate section 44 and marginal flange projections 46, 48, the lengths of which are varied to suit the size of the container required.
