Leakage of fluid, e.g. highly viscous liquid, between a rotary shaft 1 and a housing 4 is prevented by means of a sleeve 2 fixed to the shaft and having a 1 in 50 to 2 in 1 tapered, outer surface which is spaced from a correspondingly tapered inner surface of a surrounding shell 3, the outer surface of the sleeve having a screw-thread 9 formed therein in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the shaft. The shell 3 is axially adjustable by means of a bolt and nut arrangement 8, 10 so that the clearance between the shell and the sleeve 2 may be altered according to the viscosity of the liquid present in the housing.
