Abstract

974,701. Modifying acoustic properties. COUNCIL FOR SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH. Nov. 23, 1960 [Nov. 25, 1959], No. 39969/59. Heading G5X. [Also in Division H4] A microphone 13 and loudspeaker 15 are located in an auditorium and are coupled by an amplifier 14 the gain of which is adjustable to control the reverberation of the auditorium. The microphone and loudspeaker are located at points on a selected normal mode of vibration in the auditorium between which a minimum or substantially minimum amplifier gain is required to produce the desired maximum reverberation time for the selected mode, and the amplifier gain is set to a value at which the required reverberation time at the selected mode frequency is obtained. Two or more loudspeakers may be located at different positions and fed from a common microphone and amplifier. A few hundred microphone-amplifierloudspeaker units may be constructed, each unit catering for a different normal mode of vibration. The highest frequency mode may be 2,000 cycles per second, preferably 1,000 cycles per second.
