Abstract

974,486. Ball joints. AMERICAN METAL PRODUCTS CO. Nov. 13, 1961 [Nov. 30, 1960], No. 40562/61. Heading E2F. The ball end 12 of a stud 10 is encased in a layer 14 of low friction bearing material and an outer thicker layer 24 of backing material is moulded about the low friction layer to maintain it firmly pressed into engagement with the ball. The ball together with the layers forms a self-contained unit for use in making a ball and socket joint. The low friction layer 14 may be made of polytetraflueroethylene and may be in the form of a cloth, and the backing material may be rubber or a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin.
