A tool-holder device for a planing machine &c. in which the work or tool is reciprocated, comprises means for moving a tool 11 at each end of a stroke alternately to bring two cutting edges 12, 13 into operation. The lower face 21 of the tool is relieved. The tool has a square shank 37 clamped by a screw 38 in a holder 24 oscillated between adjustable stops 39, 40 by a lever 31 controlled by stops on the machine. In a modification, the tool-holder is oscillated by spring and solenoid means. In a further modification, the tool shank 42, Fig. 10, carries two tools 44, 45.
