Abstract
973,988. Heating vapour generators by hot fluids. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING Inc. March 28, 1963 [May 8, 1962], No. 12294/63. Heading F4A. In a steam boiler heated by a hot liquid, such as pressurized water, liquid metal, or petroleum, or by a hot gas, which flows through the tubes of a tube bundle immersed in water in the vapour generating portion of a vessel, said portion being separated from the heating medium inlet and outlet chambers located at the end of the vessel by a tube plate, the tube plate being supported against distortion by the pressure of the heating medium by a thick walled tube rigidly attached to the tube plate and the end of the vessel, and serving, for example, as a steam offtake. In the form shown, the boiler 10 comprises a vertically elongated cylindrical body 11 closed at its ends by hemispherical heads 12, 13 welded to the body defining a closed vessel. The vessel is divided into an upper hot fluid portion and a lower steam generating portion by a tube plate 14. The tube plate has a centrally located opening 18 to which is joined a cylindrical nozzle 20 by a weld 22. A plurality of apertures 19 receive the ends of U-tubes 28 forming a tube bundle suspended from said plate. The upper end of the nozzle is welded to the upper head 12, and provides an external outlet to the lower steam generating portion. The hot fluid portion is divided into inlet and outlet chambers 24, 25, the hot fluid passing through the U-tubes between them. A number of annular spacer plates 29 support the tubes which pass through a series of apertures, whilst they include a series of smaller apertures which permit the upward passage of steam created in the steam generating portion of the system to the outlet nozzle 20. A central downcomer conduit 32 permits feed-water from the rectangular inlet pipe 34 to be passed to the lower portion of the tube bundle. In a modification the vapour generated may be inverted, such that the tube plate 14 rests on the nozzle 20 which could serve as a drain.
