Abstract

973,746. Cooling towers. J. ZEMANEK. March 2, 1961, No. 7729/61. Heading F4K. [Also in Division B1] A filling body for gas-liquid contact cooling towers comprises parallely supported synthetic plastic sheets for supporting liquid films, each sheet having apertures which are at least partly bounded by portions of the sheet directed away from the medial plane of the sheet. The sheets may have slotted projections (Fig. la), may be in the form of waves having staggered slots along their crests (Fig. 2a), or may have the shape shown in Fig. 3 formed by punching holes in a flat sheet and subsequently stretching the sheet and bending the rims of the holes. In the cross-flow heat exchanger shown in Fig. 4 a plastic sheet 1 according to the invention is suspended from pipes 7, spaced by pipes 11, and held taut by loads 9 guided in cut-outs 10<SP>1</SP> of a spacing member 10. Water is guided on to the sheet by vanes 12 welded to the spacing pipes. In further constructions, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), sheets of the Fig. 2a type are arranged vertically with their crests together or separated by plane sheets, forming selfsupporting assemblies which may rest on beams.
