Abstract

973,507. Master cylinders. H. TEVES, E. A. TEVES, and M. TAUSEND, [trading as ALFRED TEVES MASCHINENUND ARMATURENFABRIK KOMM.-GES.]. Aug. 23, 1961 [Dec. 2, 1960], No. 30410/61. Heading F2F. A tandem master cylinder 1 for hydraulic brakes comprises a mechanical or hydraulic piston 3 and a floating piston 4 disposed one behind the other and each operates a separate brake circuit, their operative chambers 26, 15 being connected to a tank 5 when the pistons are in the initial position. An extension 22 of piston 3 is guided in a bore 21 of the floating piston 4 and the operative chamber 26 of piston 3 communicates with the compensating tank 5 through bores 7 in the cylinder wall, 23 in the periphery of the floating piston 4, and 24, 25 in the piston extension. The communication is interrupted when the piston extension 22 moves in its guide by the edge of the floating piston 4 or by a lipped packing 27 mounted on the front edge. The initial positions of the pistons may be determined by abutments 18, 32. A rib 11 sealed by a packing ring 12, forms two chambers connected to tank 5 from which fluid may pass through the one way valve formed by apertures 10, 28 and gaskets 17, 27 respectively into working chambers 15, 26. The working surface areas of the two pistons 3, 4 may be made equal by providing an extension on the floating piston, the extension passing through the end 16 of cylinder 1 or by stepping the cylinder. A rib 6 may be provided in tank 5 to avoid losing all the braking fluid if one brake connection fails.
