[Also in Division H2] In apparatus comprising an indicator 33, 34 of the rate of travel of a motor vehicle and an indicator 20, 21 of its engine speed, gearing 7, 8, 9,10 in the transmission from the engine is so chosen that at the optimum or maximum permissible speed of the engine the pointer 20 indicates one hundred per cent on the scale 21 which is adapted to indicate ratios between actual and optimum or maximum permissible engine speed. As shown in Fig. 3, the dial 21 and central area of chart 22 are graduated in percentages from 70 to 120, the lower range being suppressed by prestressing the return spring 14 acting on the eddycurrent bell 13 of a tachometer measuring engine speed. Another tachometer measures rate of travel which is indicated on scale 34 and recorded in the outer area of chart 22. A stack of charts, (Fig. 4 not shown) may be provided for a week's recording. In another embodiment engine speed is recorded over the full range one side of a chart and rate of travel on the reverse side. The idle time of engine can be recorded as shown in Fig. 5 by using an electric circuit including a snap-action switch 42 and heating wire 43. The switch 42 is closed by a frame part 17<SP>11</SP> through a switch part 45 and snap-action spring 48 while a spring 49 holds a frame part 17<SP>1</SP> against a stop 57, which the stylus 19 in zero position. When the ignition 41 is switched on the wire 43 heats up and expands, allowing a spring 52 to rock a lever 50 and lift the frame 17<SP>11</SP>, this raises the stylus 19 slightly and opens contacts 46, 47. The wire 43 cools, stylus 19 returns to zero and the contacts 46, 47 remake. A bar diagram 58 is thus produced while the engine is idling, but as soon as the engine speed rises the wheel 16 drives the rack 17 and the stylus records a graph 59 of its rotation speed. The speed measuring systems may be of eddycurrent or centrifugal pendulum type.
