A tachograph for vehicles with at least one measuring device 15 for measuring the drive speed or number of revolutions of the vehicle engine and means 7 for recording the measured values, includes a front face assembly 4 adapted to house a diagram chart 7 at the back thereof, a case assembly 1 movable relative to the front assembly 4 for exposing the chart 7, a back cover 62 detachably securable to the case assembly 1 and at least one independently operable measuring device 15 detachably secured to the case assembly 1 so as to be readily replaceable as a unit. The housing 46 of a speedometer unit 15 has annular recesses 66 interfitting lugs 64, 65 of the cover 62 and apertured lugs 57, 58 matching threaded holes 59, 60 of the bottom 2 of case 1. The housing 46 has a threaded piece 61 to receive the drive for shaft 28. The shaft 28 is formed with a worm 29 to transmit a drive to a worm wheel 30 on a shaft 22 formed with a worm 31. A bearing block 19 forms a unit adapted to receive the worm 31 to drive a cam 26 controlling a distance recorder and a hollow shaft 23 with slots for coupling by a pin 27 to the shaft 11 of a distance counter, when the two units are entered in apertures 16, 18 in the bottom 2 of case 1. The device 15 may be an eddy-current speedometer with a permanent magnet 37 mounted on its drive-shaft 28, which provides a bearing 38 for the shaft 13 of an eddy current cup 39, whose displacement against a restoring spring 40 is transmitted by a toothed wheel 14 on the shaft 13. A second bearing for the shaft 13 is provided in a bridge 47 rotatable on the housing 46 by means of an annular fastener 48 within which another annulus 51 is also adjustable. The restoring spring 40 is held at its outer end between lugs 53, 54 of the annulus 51 and at its inner end in bush 55 driven with bush 42 of the cup 39 secured to shaft 13. When the units are inserted in the case 1, the wheel 14 meshes with a wheel 12 mounted therein in mesh with (a) a rack on a slide 71 guided on rods 73, 74 and provided with a stylus 76 to record speed on the chart 7 and (b) a wheel 78 with a piece 79 for fastening detachably to a coupling 10 in the front 4 to drive a speed indicator. The speedometer may be calibrated before insertion and means are provided for engaging the driving and driven parts in correct alignment including pins and holes to hold a pre-stressed condition. The case 1 may also house a vibration pendulum and/or a vibration pick-up for driving other styli to record working times of vehicle drivers.
