Abstract
973,441. Hydraulic torque converters. A. G. SCHEIDER. Dec. 18, 1961, No. 45359/61. Heading F2C. A fluid transmission, such as an hydraulic torque converter, comprises a blade 12, Figs. 2 and 3, having a curved entry portion 19 and a relatively straight exit portion 20, a channel 21 in the curved portion opening to the pressure side of the exit portion, and a curved spring flap means 23 rigidly mounted on the entrance portion to normally close the channel but being yieldable to open the channel depending upon the direction of flow of fluid relative to the blade and flap means. The end of the flap means bears against the pressure side of the exit portion when the fluid flows in the direction of the arrow A but lifts to open the channel when the fluid flows in the direction of the arrow B whereby shocks and turbulence losses are reduced in the transmission. The reactor blades only or the blades of the reactor, impeller and turbine may be formed as above. The blades may be cast with the portions 19, 20 having a streamline shape or the portions may be formed from sheet metal parts a, b, Fig. 6a, with the spring flap 23g secured to the part a. In a further embodiment, slots 21d, 21e, Fig. 8, are cut from sheet metal blades 12a to leave webs 25, 26 and a single spring flap may be secured to web 25 to control both slots or separate spring flaps 23h, 23i, Fig. 7, may be secured to each web 25, 26, each flap controlling its associated slot.
