Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0973008/C1/1> wherein L is -CONH2, -CO-alkyl or -CH(OH)-alkyl, the alkyl groups each containing at most 2 carbon atoms. They are prepared by reacting 1-(2-methoxyphenyl)-piperazine with 2,2-diphenyl -4- bromobutyronitrile to give 2,2-diphenyl-4-[4- (2 - methoxyphenyl) - piperazine]-butyronitrile and then either hydrolysing this or the dihydro-chloride thereof to the corresponding amide or reacting it with the appropriate alkyl magnesium halide to give, on hydrolysis, the required alkyl ketone, which may then be reduced with lithium aluminium hydride to give the required alcohol. Examples are given. The compounds of the invention are stated to form salts with inorganic and organic acids and quaternary ammonium salts with a variety of organic esters of sulphuric, hydrohalic and aromatic sulphonic acids.
