Abstract
A binder composition, useful as mortar for bonding masonry units, comprises hydraulic cement, water to set it, an epoxy resin curable at ambient temperature and a curing agent for the resin. The composition may also contain natural or synthetic rubber latex, and a plasticizer, e.g. dibutyl phthalate. Epoxy resins mentioned are glycidyl ethers from polyhydric phenols and epichlorhydrin or glycerol dichlorhydrin. Solid resins are used as solutions in ethylene glycol, methyl or ethyl ether or in a reactive diluent, e.g. alkyl- or butyl-glycidyl ether, or together with sufficient liquid epoxy resin to make the mixture liquid. Suitable curing agents are polyamides from a polymeric fatty acid and a polyamine, or polysulphides. Suitable hydraulic cements are Portland, Keene's, Le Farge, Roman, Slag, or Pozzolana. The water may include small amounts of detergent or wetting agents. Suitable fillers or extenders are sand, clay or calcium carbonate.ALSO:A binder composition, useful as mortar for binding masonry units, comprises hydraulic cement, water to set it, an epoxy resin curable at ambient temperature and a curing agent for the resin. Suitable hydraulic cements are Portland, Keene's, Le Farge, Roman, Slag, or pozzolana. The water may include small amounts of detergent or wetting agents. Suitable fillers or extruders are sand, clay or calcium carbonate. A suitable composition is 50 parts by weight Portland cement, 8 parts butadiene-styrene latex (45% solids), 19.4 parts water, 12.45 parts liquid epoxy resin, 7.7 parts of polyamide curing agent from dilinoleic acid and ethylene diamine. The compositions are also useful as sealing or bonding agents in a variety of applications.
