Abstract

Adipic acid is produced by oxidising cyclohexane with a gas containing molecular oxygen in the presence of an oxy compound of boron capable of ester formation under the reaction conditions with cyclohexanol, removing unreacted cyclohexane, and further oxidising the product with nitric acid. The oxy compound may be meta, pyro or orthoboric acid, an anhydride or mixed anhydride of boric acid, an alkali metal borate, or a borate ester of an alcohol containing up to 12 carbon atoms. The oxy compound is added in an amount of from 0.01% to 10% of an equivalent, per mol. of cyclohexane, in the form of an aqueous solution. Specification 633,354 is referred to.
