Abstract

Polyamides are coloured using a blue pigment dyestuff consisting of a perylene-3:4:9:10-tetracarboxy-bis-benzimidazole having two alkyl substituents in the aromatic ring of each benzimidazole group. The pigment dyestuff may be added to the polymer prior to the melt-spinning, solution spinning or moulding thereof or may be mixed with the polymer-forming ingredients prior to polymerization. In examples a pigment dyestuff of this type is ground and intimately mixed with hexamethylene diammonium adipate, acetic acid is added and the mixture heated in a sealed tube and then under a nitrogen atmosphere. The polymer is then spun to a blue yarn. Specification 859,288 is referred to.ALSO:The invention comprises pigment dyestuffs which are perylene-3: 4: 9: 10-tetracarboxy-bis-benzimidazoles containing in the aromatic ring of each benzimidazole group two alkyl substituents. The dyestuffs are made by condensing perylene - 3: 4: 9: 10 - tetracarboxylic acid or its dianhydride with two equivalents of a dialkyl-1: 2-phenylene diamine. Duestuffs specified are those containing in the benzimidazole groups methyl groups in the 4: 5-, 4: 6-, 4: 7-, 5: 6- and 5: 7-positions and mixtures of dyestuffs obtained by using in the condensation 3: 4- or 3: 5-dimethyl-1: 2-phenylene diamine. The pigment dyestuffs colour synthetic polymers such as polyamides in blue shades. Specification 859,288 is referred to.
