Abstract

972,436. Tower cranes. STOTHERT. & PITT Ltd. July 30, 1963. [July 31, 1962], No. 29471/62. Heading B8B. If the rope which hauls the load trolley of a tower-crane to and fro breaks, a trip arm 25 is pushed to the right in Fig. 1 by a spring 23 to release a sprag lever 19 which swings about its fulcrum 18 under gravity and engages part of the jib to arrest the trolley. Opposite ends of the trolley hauling rope are attached to threaded rods 14, 15 and the rope is tensioned by springs 17, 23 which abut thrust plates 10, 11, and nuts 16, 24. As the spring 17 is stronger than spring 23 the latter cannot move the trip arm 25 to release the sprag until the rope breaks. The sprag 19 carries a ballast weight 20 and is pivoted about the rod 15.
