Abstract

Chloroprene with or without small amounts of styrene, acrylic and methacrylic acids and their esters and nitriles and butadiene, is polymerized in aqueous alkaline emulsion in the presence of an alkyl mercaptan, 2-30% of the mercaptan being present at the start of the polymerization and the remainder being added in increments before 60% of the chloroprene has polymerized, the polymerization being stopped when 60 to 85% of the chloroprene has polymerized. Octyl and dodecyl mercaptans are preferred and the remainder of the mercaptan may be added in at least three equal or gradually increasing increments. Potassium persulphate and ammonium persulphate are specified catalysts while disproportionated wood rosin, sodium sulphite, the sodium salt of sulphonated diisophthyl methane, the sodium salt of anthraquinone beta sulphonic-acid, sodium hydroxide ammonia, potassium hydroxide, toluene and the sodium salt of lauryl sulphate are specified additives.
