In an electrical capacitor suitable for high pulse loading, each of the capacitor plates is compositely formed by a plurality of electrically connected metallic layers separated by insulating layers, portions of corresponding faces of the metallic layers being exposed in successively stepped relationship at one end of the capacitor and being interconnected by a metal endcontact coating applied to cover the exposed portions. Fig. 1 shows the layers constituting one plate of the capacitor. Dielectric foils 3 and 4, which are preferably paper strips, are each covered with regeneratively thin metallic layers 1 and 2 which are interconnected in parallel with each other when metal end-contact 5 is sprayed on. The plate may be rolled with a second plate to form a tubular capacitor with the end contacts 5 applied to the axial ends. Layers 1 and 2 are preferably formed by vapour deposition on strips 3 and 4, and contact 5 is preferably formed by spraying in a direction oblique with respect to the stepped exposed portions of the metal layers. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), layers 1 and 2 are each coated with varnish on which a further metal layer is deposited.
