Abstract
In a process for oxidizing pollutants in automobile exhaust gases which comprises contacting the gases mixed with an oxygen-containing gas at a temperature at which the pollutants are oxidized there is used a catalyst consisting essentially of an activated mixture of (1) a support of Al2O3, SiO2-Al2O3, SiO2-MgO or an acid-treated clay having a surface area of at least 100 sq.m./gm. and containing Pt and Pd in a weight ratio of from 0,125 to 2,0 and (2) a finely-divided, porous Al2O3, SiO2-Al2O3, acid-treated clay, SiO2-MgO, Al2O3-B2O3, Al2O3-TiO2, or Al2O3-ZrO2 diluent in an amount sufficient to provide a dilution ratio from 5-250; the mixture containing from 0,005-0,2 weight per cent each of Pt and Pd. The support may have a particle size of 10-100 microns. Examples are given. Specification 952,150 and U.S.A. Specification 2,886,512 are referred to.
