1,270,224. Oxidation catalyst. INSTITUT KATALIZA SIBIRSKOGO OTDELENIA AKADEMII NAUK USSR. 19 March, 1970, No. 13275/70. Heading B1E. [Also in Division Cl] A catalyst for oxidation reactions, e.g. the contact process, comprises potassium and vanadium compounds supported on a bidisperse silica gel (i.e. a gel in which the pores are predominantly of two sizes) which has a specific area of 150-300 m<SP>2</SP>/gm, and a porosity of 1.2-0.9 cm<SP>3</SP>/gm the pore size distribution being: radius of small pores 60-90Š volume of small pores 0.6-1.0 cm<SP>3</SP>/gm radius of large pores 2000-10000Š volume of large pores 0.2-0.4 cm<SP>3</SP>/gm In the Example the silica gel is impregnated with an aqueous solution of vanadyl sulphate and potassium hydrogen sulphate, dried at 110‹ calcined at 500‹C, and used to oxidise sulphur dioxide to sulphur trioxide.
