Abstract

A catalyst comprising a support having a surface area greater than 100 sq. m./gm. carrying 2-20% CuO, 0,0025-0,1% Pd and 1-10% Cr2O3 is used to oxidize exhaust gases from I.C. engines. The support may be Al2O3, SiO2-Al2O3, SiO2-MgO or an acid-treated clay. Particularly useful is g -Al2O3 in nodular form having a Cr2O3 surface and a size of 3-10 mesh. Cuprous, cupric and palladium salts may be used in the preparation of such catalysts if desired in the presence of tartaric acid. Examples are given.
