Abstract
1383085 Microspherical carbon particles; active carbon KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO KK 28 March 1972 [27 Aug 1971] 14559/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division C5] Microspherical carbon particles of a diameter of from 10 to 5000 microns are produced by fusing a pitch having a softening point of 50‹ to 350‹ C.; a carbon content of 80 to 97% by weight and a hydrogen/carbon atomic ratio of 0À2 o 2À5 and a nitrobenzene insoluble fraction of 0 to 50% by weight, dispersing the fused pitch in an aqueous medium which contains a dispersing aid and has a temp. of 50-300‹ C.; cooling the dispersion to produce solid microspherical particles; separating and subjecting these particles to an infusibilization treatment in an oxidizing environment to raise their softening point and carbonizing these particles whilst still maintaining their particulate form. A solvent may be mixed with the pitch prior to dispersion, and this solvent is removed before the particles are treated to raise their softening point. The dispersing or suspending aid may be a water-soluble organic polymeric material e.g. partially saponified polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol, methyl cellulose, polyacrylic acid, or salt thereof, polyethylene glycol or an ether or ester derivative thereof, starch, gelatin or mixtures thereof. The dispersing or suspension aid may be present in a concentration of from 0À05 to 5% by weight. The solvent for the pitch may be an aliphatic hydrocarbon, an aromatic hydrocarbon, or an alicyclic hydrocarbon. The softening point of the particles may be raised by contacting with an oxidizing liquid, e.g. H 2 SO 4 , H 3 PO 4 , HNO 3 , aqueous chromic acid or aqueous KMnO 4 . Alternatively, the oxidizing step may be performed in a gaseous oxidizing atmosphere, e.g. comprising MO 21 O 2 , O 3 , SO 2 , Cl 2 , Br 2 or mixtures thereof, or mixtures thereof with air M 2 , Ar, or other inert diluent gas. After carbonizing, the particles may be activated by contacting with steam at 800- 1200‹ C. The carbonization and activation may be performed sequentially in the same apparatus. The carbonization may be performed at a temp. sufficient to graphitize the particles, e.g. a temp. of 2800‹ to 3000‹ C.
