The invention comprises 2,2-dialkyl-alka-3, 4- dien-1-als of the formula in which R 1 and R 2 are each an alkyl group containing from 1 to 7 carbon atoms and R 3 and R 4 are each H or an alkyl group containing from 1 to 7 carbon atoms. These compounds may be made by reacting a 2-alkyl aliphatic aldehyde R<SP>1</SP>CH(R<SP>2</SP>).CHO with an acetylenic alcohol of the formula HC#C-C(R<SP>3</SP>)(R<SP>4</SP>)-OH in the presence of an acidic catalyst, such as phosphonic acid, toluene-sulphonic acid, methionic acid, boron trifluoride and acidic ion exchange resins. If traces of acid are present in the aldehyde no further catalyst may be necessary. A solvent of higher boiling point than the reactants which boils not higher than 250‹C. may be used, e.g. di-isopropyl benzene. The aldehyde may be reduced, e.g. by formalin in alkaline solution, to a 2,2-dialkyl-alka-3, 4-diene- 1-ol, or oxidized to the corresponding acid or salt thereof. The aldehyde may be converted simultaneously to an acid and an alcohol by the Cannizzaro reaction. The alcohols and acids may be converted to esters. Detailed examples describe the preparation of 2,2-dimethyl-penta- 3,4-dien-1-ol and the corresponding alcohol and acid; 2-ethyl-2-methyl-penta-3, 4-dien-1-al; 2- butyl-2-ethyl-penta-3, 4-dien-1-al; 2-methyl-2- propyl-penta-3, 4-dien-1-al; 2, 2, 5-trimethylhepta-3, 4-dien-1-al; 2, 2, 5-trimethylhexa-3, 4- dien-1-al; 2, 2-dimethylocta-3, 4-dien-1-al; 2, 2- dimethyl-6-ethyl-deca-3, 4-dien-1-al; 2, 2, 5-trimethyl-undeca-3, 4-dien-1-al.
