971,413. Switching systems; two-part couplings. C.A.E.M. CONSTRUCTION D'APPAREILS ELECTRIQUES ET MECANIQUES S.A. Dec. 13, 1961 [Dec. 17, 1960], No. 44622/61. Headings H2E and H2H. Electrical apparatus comprises a plurality of electrical loads 3, 4, 5, 6, having a switching arrangement including a power selector 9, by means of which the electrical power consumption of the apparatus can be selectively varied by selectively coupling the loads 3, 4, 5, 6 to an electricity supply 7, 8 and a second switch part in the form of a voltage selector device comprising a fixed plate 2 and a movable plate 1 adapted to be located in a plurality of positions upon the fixed plate 2, each plate having a plurality of contact studs with the studs 15, 18, 17 of movable plate 1 arranged to contact studs 23, 26, 25 of fixed plate 2 in each of the plurality of positions to enable, in use, the internal connections to be varied according to the voltage of the supply. Fig. 1 shows the application to a heater comprising pairs of resistances 3, 4 and 5, 6 connected as shown to studs 23-26 of fixed plate 2 and across supply terminals 7, 8 through switches 19, 29. The power of resistances 5, 6 is twice that of resistances 3, 4 so that according to whether either or both switches 19, 29 are closed, three power settings are obtainable. The studs 11-18 of movable plate 1 are connected as shown and in the position illustrated the resistances of each pair are connected in series for operation on a high voltage. To adjust the heaters for operation on low voltage plate 1 is rotated 45 degrees so that studs 15-18 mate with studs 23-26 and connect the resistances in parallel. Fig. 5 (not shown) illustrates a modification in which the movable plate moves rectilinearly to charge the voltage. In a further modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the movable plate moves rectilinearly but there are no connections between the fixed circuit and the movable plate, fixed bridges being provided between the studs thereon instead. Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown) illustrate how three resistances can be connected in star or delta by a rectilinearly moving plate for connection to a correspondingly connected three-phase supply. Such an arrangement may have extra connections to permit use also with a low voltage single phase supply, Figs. 10 and 11 (not shown).
