971,396. Making and nesting boxes. CONTAINER A.G. PATENT-VERWERTUNGSGESELLSCHAFT. July 6, 1962 [July 8, 1961], No. 25982/62. Heading B5D. In a box making and nesting machine blanks are gravity fed from pairs of rails 2 to the machine from which erected box body and lid parts 4 are dispatched on to a horizontal table 3 nested in zig-zag fashion. Figs. 5 and 9 are horizontal sections showing the folding and nesting apparatus for one of the box parts which comprises sides 5 and 6, a ram 7, tongues 8, 8<SP>1</SP>, folding members 9, 9<SP>1</SP>, control members 10, 10<SP>1</SP> and push-rods 11, 11<SP>1</SP>. In Fig. 5, completed box parts B and C have been moved to the right by push-rod 11 and blank A has been folded by ram 7 against sides 5 and 6. Tongues 8, 8<SP>1</SP>, which are horizontally reciprocable and have bevelled inner ends to provide sliding surfaces for box parts B and C, also provide abutments for the base portion of blank A. Subsequently members 9, 9<SP>1</SP> are rotated through 180 degrees towards one another to complete the folding operation. In Fig. 9, ram 7 is shown introducing a further blank D between walls 5 and 6 with consequent ejection of folded blank A which partially enters the offset box part B, tongues 8, 8<SP>1</SP> having been previously retracted by control members 10, 10<SP>1</SP>. To complete the cycle of operations ram 7 is moved forward until the forward face thereof is brought flush with the rear faces of tongues 8, 8<SP>1</SP> and box parts A, B, C are moved to the left over sloping surface 12 by push-rod 11<SP>1</SP>, i.e. alternate cycles begin with the already nested box parts offset to the same side thereby effecting zig-zag nesting.
