Abstract
971,362. Cold separation of gas mixtures. PETROCARBON DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. Sept. 25, 1963 [June 30, 1962], No. 3745/62. Heading F4P. Carbon dioxide is freed of more and less volatile impurities, e.g. methane and butane respectively by two-stage separation in high and low pressure columns 9, 13, the former having a reflux condenser 14 which serves as the reboiler for column 13 and from which the gaseous methane fraction is discharged through duct 21 whilst partly purified liquid carbon dioxide collecting at the bottom of column 9 is withdrawn and expanded at a valve 23 into column 13 from the base of which liquid butane is withdrawn through a duct 24 whilst pure carbon dioxide is withdrawn as top gas. The effluent gas is warmed in an exchanger 16, compressed at 17 cooled in exchangers 18, 16, condensed in a reboiler 11 of column 9 and liquid carbon dioxide is collected in a tank 12. A portion thereof is withdrawn through a duct 27 and is expanded at a valve 28 into the head of column 13 to provide reflux. Crude feed gas after being cooled by an external refrigerant in an exchanger 2, is dried in regenerators 4, cooled in an exchanger 15, traversed by separated hydrocarbons, condensed in a reboiler 10 of column 9 and expanded at a valve 20 into said column 9.
