970,807. Continuous heat-treatment furnaces. J. FALLON. Sept. 17, 1963, No. 36458/63. Heading F4B. A continuous heat-treatment furnace comprises preheating, treating and cooling chambers 15, 17 and 19 respectively, each preceded by transfer chambers 14, 16 and 18, all said chambers being of equal length and provided with doors 21-27, and a continuous conveyer 10 carrying blocks of work supports 20 capable of occupying said length and alternating with appropriate empty spaces. Chambers 15 and 17 are heated by gaseous currents circulated by fans upwardly through the work and downwardly over gas-fired radiant tubes 28 back to the fans. Chamber 19 has fans 33 circulating cooling gas through the ware and through heat exchangers to cool the gas. Chamber 17 may be provided with an active gas for carburizing, de-carbonizing or other treatment. The conveyer comprises strands 10a-10d carrying the supports 20. Doors 23, 25 and 27 may be opened simultaneously by common operating mechanism if desired. Nitrogen may be used in chambers 15 and 19 and a gas with a substantial hydrogen and moisture content in chamber 17.
