Abstract

[Also in Division B5] Apparatus for cutting material, such as tubing 6 issuing from an extrusion machine, during its linear motion comprises a driven rotary saw 5 or abrasive disc which is moved with a planetary motion and is mounted with its electrical driving motor 11 on movable carrier means 8, means for causing the carrier means and thus the saw to have inward feed and outward return movements relative to the material, and electrical overload controlled saw release means 27 which automatically ensure the carrier means having a withdrawal movement to remove the saw from its cutting position should the saw wedge in the material. The apparatus is similar to that described in Specification 907,969 and consists of a ring 4 which carries the carrier means and saw 5 or abrasive disc and is rotated by an electric motor drive 7 in a carriage 3 movable along guide 2 on a base 1. The carrier means comprises a lever which has double ends 8, 9 and is mounted on a pivot 14 on the ring 4. The end 9 of the lever is adjustably secured by a bolt engaging any one of a plurality of holes 16 to a bracket 10 and arm 10a which carry the saw 5 and its motor 11, the drive being transmitted to the saw by a bolt 12. The motor is adjustably mounted on the bracket to vary the tension of the belt. The other end 8 of the lever is angled and carries at its extreme end a solenoid 27 having a roller 28 engaging a pivoted catch 25 which, when moved to its operative position by energization of the solenoid, engages an end 29 of a feed lever 30 mounted on a pivot 31 on the end 8 of the lever. The feed lever has a roller 33 which co-operates with a cam 39 to rock the double-ended lever 8, 9, during rotation of the ring 4 to feed the saw into the material, the lever 8, 9 being maintained in its operative position by a latch 35 engaging a pin 34 on the feed lever until, upon the ring and saw making one cycle about the material or upon an overload occurring as a result of wedging of the saw blade, the solenoid is de-energized to permit a spring 26 to withdraw the catch 25 from the end 29 of the feed lever which can thus move to disengage the latch 35 so that a spring 32 can rock the lever 8, 9 and retract the saw from the material. An audible and/or visible warning means may be incorporated in the electric circuit. The material is clamped to travel with the saw by telescopic arms 43 mounted in guide brackets 44 on a structure 45. Each arm has a roller engaged by a rectangular ring common to all the arms, whereby rotation of the ring causes the arms to move to grip the material. The ring may be moved by pneumatic, hydraulic or electrical means. In an alternative embodiment, the lever 8, 9 is replaced by a guided slide carrying a lever similar to the lever 30.
