Abstract

970,685. Putting up sutures. ETHICON Inc. Feb. 22, 1963 [Feb. 23, 1962], No. 7246/63. Heading A5R. A reel, on which a suture is wound and stored prior to use, receives the suture in a peripheral groove formed by two flanges 14, 15, Fig. 3, on a rim 13. Except for a central boss 18, the space within the rim 13 is closed by a plate-like portion 16 which is flush with the rear surface thereof so as to leave an annular recess 17 in which the needle 27 can be stored. The reel is preferably made from a soft synthetic resin so that the needle can be pushed through a raised spoke-like portion 19, Fig. 2. Slots 22 allow the suture to be gripped, if necessary, during an operation and wider slots 23 allow the suture to run easily from the needle to the groove. The point of the needle is thus protected within the recess 17 and, in the preferred manner of use, the suture is drawn off and straightened by stretching before the needle is withdrawn, so as to avoid the possibility of harming the user.
