Abstract

802,253. Tyre bead cores. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. April 4, 1956 [April 13, 1955], No. 10278/56. Classes 144 (1) and 144 (2). A tyre bead core 10 is formed by a spiral winding of rubberized parallel-wire ribbon or braid wound flat upon itself, the inner end portion 16 of the ribbon being brought out from the radially inner surface of the core and laid either diagonally along the side of the core, Fig. 3, or extended still further to lie on the radially outer surface of the core, Fig. 2, thereby leaving the core inner surface free from ends. The ribbon shown comprises rubber-embedded parallel wires 5-9 and the core is. wound on a former ring 18, Figs. 4a and 5, having a winding surface 19 wider than the ribbon with a locating flange 23 at one edge. The winding surface 19 includes a slot 20 in which the starting end portion 16 of the ribbon is located, laterally offset from the position occupied by the core during winding, ready to be laid in the desired position on completion of the winding.
