A dispenser for soap, cheese &c. comprises a casing 14 detachably secured to a wall plate 1, a compartment 17 in the casing to hold soap &c. in tablet or block form, a grater 6 screwed to a frame 5, which has lugs 8 sliding on rods 4 carried by lugs 31 on the base plate, and secured to a discharge tube 9 for the grated soap &c., the frame being maintained in its uppermost position by springs 7 and pulled downwards by manipulation of the tube 9 to grate the soap &c. The tube has a tapered inlet 10 positioned in front of the grating surface and is guided in an opening in the flange 12 at the edge of the back plate. A pressure plate 18, fitting into the compartment 17, is urged by a spring 23 to press the soap against the grating surface and has lugs 19 guided in slots 20 in two walls of the compartment which is closed by a detachable lid 21 secured by a screw passing through aperture 22. One of the lugs 19 engages on lever 24 mounted on a spindle 25 and carrying a plate 26 indicating when -filling is required and moved behind a window 27 as the spring- urged plate 18 moves according to the amount of soap &c. remaining. The casing, back plate and grater are of metal, e.g. stainless steel, or of plastic. In a modification, for use with blocks or material having a central aperture, the pressure plate is apertured for guiding on a rod or tube which is fitted in a boss on the inside of the lid and may be adjustable therein to regulate the spring pressure.
