[Also in Division D1] A collet assembly which is particularly intended for supporting and driving a cardboard tube or former on which thread or the like is to be wound comprises a plurality of spaced annular driving rings mounted around a driving spindle, the driving rings being expansible by centrifugal force upon rotation of the spindle to grip and drive the tube. Expansible annular drive rings 46 of rubber are mounted alternately with spacer rings 42 coaxially with and around a driving spindle 12. The spacer rings may be of aluminium or reinforced moulded plastic. When at rest the spacer and drive rings present a cylindrical surface over which the tube 14 may be slipped to abut against an end flange 56 of the collet assembly. Drive is transmitted to the spacers 42 by pins 40 engaging axial grooves 44 in the spacer rings and from the latter to the drive rings by further, axially disposed pins engaging radial slots in the drive rings (Fig. 5, not shown). Expansion of the drive rings 46 is limited by the outer flange members of the spacer rings 42. 'An axial extension 32 of an end hub 28 of the collet assembly is provided with circumferential grooves 31 for the reception of an initial waste portion of the wound material and axially disposed grooves 32 undercut the grooves 31 and provide for the insertion of a hooked knife for the removal of the waste winding.
