Abstract

1464873 Mounting reels on shafts; clutches FORDS (FINSBURY) Ltd 30 April 1974 [4 May 1973] 21418/73 Headings F2U and F2C A chuck for coupling a winding core to a mandrel on which the chuck is fixed comprises gears movable radially outwards together along surfaces 34 of the chuck to grip the core, the gears 38 engaging teeth cut in the surfaces 34. The gears move together through engagement with a rotatable member having radial slots 43 engaged by portions 44 of the gears 38. When the gears are at the radially innermost part of a surface 34 they project sufficiently for a core to engage at least one to thereby move all the gears radially outwards on rotation of the core relative to the mandrel. The coupling is selftightening during drive and the rotation of the mandrel may cause the coupling if the resistance of the core to rotation is sufficient. A friction coupling between a chuck and mandrel is shown in Fig. 7, this having members 75 fixed for rotation with the mandrel 60 by pins 76 and friction members 74 between members 75 and the chuck 10, an axial force causing the friction grip, which slips under strain.
