Abstract
1529672 Expandable rollers; friction clutches PERSHKE PRICE SERVICE ORGANISATION Ltd 28 Oct 1975 [31 July 1974] 33796/74 Headings F2U and F2C An expandable roller for gripping a core or reel 2 comprises one or more nuts 7, 8 relatively movable on a screwed cylinder 3 and provided with an inclined surface for expanding radially movable gripping members 9, 10 (11) which are arranged around the nuts keyed thereto at 17 and retained axially at 19. As shown, three gripping segments are held together by a spring 15, restrained by end plates 19 and rotatablyfast with the nuts 7, 8 by keys 17 co-operating with grooves 18. The roller is self-tightening, the frictional engagement between the segments and core 2 causing the nuts 7, 8 to move along the screwthreads 4, 5 and engage the inclined walls of the V-section grooves of the segments. An adjustable stop may be provided to limit contraction of the segments. In Fig. 3 (not shown) one of the nuts (35, 36) is provided with a set of radial handles (43) for manual rotation and locking and is mounted on a screwthreaded portion of opposite hand to that for the other nut. In Fig. 4 (not shown) a single nut (50) with a V-section groove (51) is provided. In Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), gripping members are in the form of plungers (65) guided radially by pins (67) fixed to a cage (64) and rotation-fast with the nut (62) by keys (70); rotation of the cylinder (60) relative to the cage causes the nuts to urge the plungers outwardly against the pressure of springs (69). In Fig. 7 (not shown), three expandable sets of segments (80) are freelymounted on a single drive shaft (81) with the interposition of friction washers (83) and thrust rings (82) which are keyed to the shaft in the manner of a plate clutch; rotation of the drive shaft rotates each screwed cylinder through the frictional couplings, including the frictional drive from a clamp nut (84) secured to the shaft, until a pre-determined torque is reached between each set of segments and the respective reels to be gripped. If required, the sets of segments may be joined by keys (85).
