Abstract

In an adjustable torque-limiting friction coupling, particularly for driving a web-winding roller 9, driving inner and driven outer rings 1, 2 define a chamber 12 housing the torque-limiting coupling friction means and have radially opposed circumferential V-section grooves within which are arranged balls to form a ball bearing 7 providing radial and axial support for the outer ring on the inner ring, the inner ring 1 having a relatively axially adjustable part 6 for taking up bearing play, and the inner and outer rings having overlapping portions 1a, 2a defining a seal between the chamber 12 and the bearing 7. The winding roller 9 is releasably frictionally coupled to the outer ring 2 by a garter spring 4 in a groove 4a formed on one side by the outer ring and on the other side by a threaded ring 3 rotatable on the outer ring between two stops. Predominantly perpendicular side walls of the groove are interrupted by inclined sections projecting into the groove towards the spring. By rotating the ring 3 from a spring retraction position in which the inclined sections of the ring 3 are opposite the perpendicular sections of the ring 2 to a position in which the inclined sections of both rings are opposite one another the spring is outwardly pressed to frictionally engage the winding core. Projections 16 on the outer ring serve as stops for the winding roller which has a corresponding number of internal recesses so dimensioned that when in register with the projections they permit axial withdrawal of the roller. The torque limiting coupling friction means comprises shoes 8, 8<SP>1</SP> anchored on the inner ring 1 and expanded into engagement with the outer ring 2 by a spring 14 (which may be rubber) interposing the shoes. The force of the spring is adjusted to vary coupling torque transmission by relative circumferential movement of the shoes. The shoe 8<SP>1</SP> is pivoted, at 13<SP>1</SP>, directly on the inner ring, whereas the shoe 8 is pivoted, at 13, on an adjusting ring 10 clamped to, and circumferentially adjustable with respect to, the inner ring. The adjusting ring 10 is clamped by screws 11 which together with adjusting ring slots 17 determine the adjustment limits. The shoes may be of brake lining material.
