[Also in Division B8] A method of packaging comprises encircling the goods in heat-sealable and heat-shrinkable film, arranging for the film to project beyond opposite ends of the goods and applying heat to the film or parts thereof to shrink it on to the goods. In the described embodiment two webs of film 4, 7, are passed over and in front of rollers 36, 35, and 45, 44, respectively, whence members 18, 20, carrying a low voltage, high current heating wire 31 and an insulating pad 33, respectively, are brought together to seal the two webs and cut off the surplus so as to form a continuous web. The article to be packaged is next pushed from a table 40 to another table 41 carrying the film with it. The members 18, 20 are then brought together again to effect the sealing and also cut the film so that the newly formed package is separated from the rest of the film and the film is again in the position as shown in Fig. 5C, ready to receive the next article. The operation of the members is as shown in Fig. 1. Vertical plates 9 at each side of the apparatus have slots 10, 11 in which the members 18, 20 can move. U-shaped rods 15, 16 are connected to each end of the members 18, 20, respectively, and pass through the ends of two rods 14, situated at each side of the apparatus and mounted as shown to be rockable on a rod 13. A tension spring 21, connected between the bottom portion of rod 15 and the frame of the apparatus, ensures that the members 18, 20 are, in their normal position, apart; their moving together being effected by pressure on the bottom portion of the rod 15. The apparatus may also be as shown in Fig. 6 where arms 18<SP>1</SP> with subsidiary heating wires are also provided to effect the sealing of the protruding parts of the webs on opposite sides of the article.
