Abstract

An electroplating bath containing nickel salts is improved by adding chloral hydrate or bromal hydrate together with a glycol ether compound of formula: R1OCH2-A-CH2OR2, where R1 is H, <FORM:0970268/C6-C7/1> , -C2H4OH, <FORM:0970268/C6-C7/2> , and R2 is the same but not H, and A is -CH=CH- or -C­C-. Compounds formed by reacting an epichlorhydrin with a butyne diol are preferred. Other optional additions are formalin, and fluoboric acid or salts thereof. Plating conditions specified are: pH 3-4.8, and temperature 50-65 DEG C. A second bright nickel coating may be applied using a bath as above containing a glycol ether having a -C­C- group and allyl sulphonic acid, as described in Specification 970,269. The coats may be of equal thickness and total 25m . A final chromium coat may be added. Reference is made to regenerating the electrolyte by an active carbon filter.
