Abstract

970,211. Hatch covers. INTERNATIONAL MACGREGOR ORGANIZATION. Dec. 16, 1960 [Jan. 6, 1960; March 2, 1960; Sept 21, 1960], No. 43427/60. Headings B7L and B7S. [Also in Division E2] A hatch-cover section P, which rolls along the coaming tracks 3 on rollers 2 is lowered to bring the sealing strips e into engagement with the upstands b, in the hatch closed position, by allowing the rollers 2 to drop into the openings 9 in the tracks 3. This is effected by a retractable member 6 which is pivoted to the position shown in chain-dotted lines by the hydraulic jack 19, electric motor or winch. The member 6 is formed with a hook 13 which, during the movement to the retracted position, engages a catch 14 on the cover-section to lock the section in the hatched-closed position. All the members 6 located at one side of a hatchway are operated in unison by the connecting-rod 23, or a cable or chain, which is moved in opposite axial directions by a jack 19 located at each end of it. In a further embodiment the retracting member is moved in a vertical plane normal to the roller track by a cam surface on the connecting-rod, the hook being a separate member which is moved to a locking position by a projection on the connecting-rod. A further embodiment describes a retractable member hinged to the hatch coaming which is moved to the retracted position by an eccentric segment which is rotated by the connecting rod. In this case the sections are locked in the closed position by a spring-loaded eye-bolt which is located over the end of the roller axle. Another embodiment describes a retractable member which is moved in a vertical plane normal to the roller track by a connecting-rod operating through a crank linkage. The locking member in this case being either an eye-bolt or U-bolt which is hinged to the top plate of the retractable member and which is moved to lock the roller axle by engagement with the edge of the opening, in the roller track, through which the member passes. The Specification also describes an arrangement in which the rollers on which the cover-sections move are mounted on the retractable members. All the retractable members may be mounted on a beam, extending alongside the hatchway, which is moved up and down by hydraulic jacks. A further embodiment describes the retractable member pivoted through an arm to a connecting rod so that axial movement of the rod moves the member up and down. In this case the sections may move along the coaming on a stud or roller which is trapped by a projection on the member in the sectionlocked position. The Specification envisages various combinations of features disclosed in the different embodiments.
