Abstract
A gum plastic composition comprises a mixture of a hard inelastic resin, a graft copolymer compatible therewith of resin-forming monomer on a rubbery component, and a non-volatile oil which is miscible with the rubbery component and substantially immiscible with the inelastic resin and the resinous component of the graft copolymer, the weight ratio of the oil to the rubbery component being from 1:10 to 2:1, and the rubbery component and the oil comprising 3 to 50% by weight of the mixture. The resin-forming monomer of the graft copolymer and the monomer used for making the inelastic resin may be styrene, alkyl- and chloro-styrenes, vinyl naphthalene, acrylic and methacrylic acids and their nitriles and C1-C8 alkyl esters, maleic anhydride, maleic and fumaric acids and their lower alkyl esters, vinyl and vinylidene chlorides and vinyl acetate. The rubbery component of the graft copolymer may be natural rubber, or a synthetic rubber which is a homopolymer of butadiene, isoprene, dimethyl butadiene, 1,3-pentadiene, or copolymers thereof with one another or with other nonomers of the types specified above. Non-volatile oils specified are hydrocarbon oils of aliphatic, naphthenic and aromatic types. The oil is preferably used in the form of an aqueous emulsion which is added to a latex of the rubbery component either before or after graft polymerization. The examples describe the addition of hydrocarbon oils to the following resin-graft copolymer blends: (1-5) styrene/acrylonitrile copolymer resins + styrene-acrylonitrile/polybutadiene graft copolymers; (6) polyvinyl chloride + styrene-acrylonitrile/polybutadiene graft copolymer; (7) methyl methacrylate/styrene copolymer resin + methyl methacrylate-styrene/(butadiene-co-styrene) graft copolymer; and (8) styrene/methacrylic acid copolymer resin + styrene-methacrylic acid/ polybutadiene graft copolymer.
