Abstract

969,652. Masted lift trucks. LEWISSHEPARD CO. Dec. 5, 1961, No. 43467/61. Heading B8H. In a fork lift truck provided with a threesection mast 16, 18, 20, the forks 14 are raised on the inner section 20 by a pair of pull rams 24 and chains 40 at a 3: 1 velocity ratio while the section 20 is held fixed, the section 20, together with the fork 14, is then raised by a push ram 30 and the chains 40 at a 2: 1 velocity ratio and at the same time the intermediate suction 18 is raised by cables 68, 76 at half the rate of the section 20. Each chain 40 passes from an anchorage 38 on the piston-rod 28 of ram 24, round a pulley 42 on the cylinder of ram 30, a pulley 36 on piston-rod 28, a pulley 44 on the piston-rod 32 of ram 30, pulleys 46, 48, 50 in section 20 to a lug 52 on the fork 14. The section 20 is locked to the section 18 by a latch, Figs. 11-14 (not shown) which is released when the forks 14 reach the top of the section 20 by a finger on the forks which at the same time open a sequence valve to allow pressure fluid to pass to the ram 30. Extension of the ram 30 then raises the section 20 by means of the chains 40. At the same time the section 18 is raised at half the speed of the section 20 by a cable 68 which is secured at 70 to the section 20 and passes round a pulley 72 at the bottom of section 18 to an anchorage 74 on the fixed section 16. A cable 76, secured to the sections 20, 16 at 78, 82 respectively and passing round a pulley 80 on the section 18, ensures that when the section 20 is lowered, the section 18 will be pulled down at half the speed of the section 20. The effective areas of the pistons of rams 24, 30 are chosen to maintain a constant upward speed of the fork as the ram 30 takes over from the rams 24. The mast section 16 comprises braced channel members 16<SP>1</SP>, 16<SP>11</SP>, Fig. 20, provided at their upper ends with rollers 186, 186<SP>1</SP>, the section 18 comprises I-members 18<SP>1</SP>, 18<SP>11</SP> and is provided with upper and lower rollers 196, 196<SP>1</SP> and 188, 188<SP>1</SP> respectively, and the section 20 comprises I-members 20<SP>1</SP>, 20<SP>11</SP> provided with at their lower ends with rollers 198, 198<SP>1</SP>. The section 16 is pivoted to the truck and is tilted by rams 172.
