Abstract

Polymer bonded flexible abrasives are prepared by mixing abrasive particles with discrete, flexible, porous bodies and a polymeric bonding agent and curing in a mould. The bonding agent may be a liquid, solution, or colloidal suspension of e.g. natural and synthetic rubber, polyester and polyether resins, polyurethane rubbers, ethenoid polymers and copolymers, polyamides, cellulose plastics, silicone rubbers and resins. The abrasive may be fused alumina, silicon carbide, emery, diamond, rouge and chromic oxide. The porous bodies specified are pellets of natural or synthetic sponge or foam rubber, polyurethane foam, expanded ethenoids, natural or cellulosic sponge, fibrous materials in suitable form e.g. balls of mill puff. The abrasive may be reinforced by insertions into the mixture prior to curing of fibre or woven fabric. The mixture may be compressed prior to curing. Proportions of 1-100 parts of porous material and 5-50 parts of abrasive per 100 parts of bonding agent are specified.ALSO:Flexible abrasives are prepared by mixing abrasive particles with discrete, flexible, porous bodies and a bonding agent and curing in a mould.
