Abstract

Object for the working of critical surfaces, e.g. an abrasive sheet, where abrasive particles (2) with average size below 10 um adhere to the surface of polymer flakes (1) which form a microporous polymer sponge matrix (1) which absorbs liqs. The polymer (1) is pref. a water-bonding polymer absorbing aq. liqs., whereas particles (2) are selected from rare earth- and metal-oxides, esp. the oxides of Ce, Zr, Al, Fe, Sn, Cr, colloidal silica, quartz flour, polishing rouge, or pumice stone. The mixt. (1,2) is pref. carried by a substrate which is flexible, esp. a self-supporting fabric or paper. A weak bond may be used between materials (1,2) so that during a polishing operation the abrasive particles are rubbed off the polymer (1) in a controlled manner. Esp. for the polishing of lenses, but also the polishing of glass, plastic, metal, ceramics, semiconductors, metallurgical- and geological- samples, quartz, semiprecious stones, or piezoelectric crystals etc. The abrasive (2) can roll off the polymer (1) duing polishing and is therefore very effective.
