Abstract

Textile materials are dyed, printed and/or optically brightened in a process wherein the material is treated in the presence of an alkaline reacting agent, if necessary at elevated temperature, with at least one dye or optical brightening agent which has one or more reactive hydrogen atoms preferably attached via N,O or S or which is capable of forming such atoms during the process, and with at least one uncoloured, non-fluorescent heterocyclic compound which contains, preferably attached via N, at least two radicals of the formula <FORM:0969306/D1-D2/1> in which X is a direct linkage, a phenylene or a substituted phenylene radical and Y is a halogen, preferably a Cl or Br atom. The present process is particularly applicable to textile materials of native and/or regenerated cellulose but may also be applied to materials of cellulose acetate, acrylonitrile polymers and copolymers, aromatic polyester, polyamides, wool and silk. A number of suitable inorganic and organic alkaline reacting agents are specified. The dyes and brightening agents may be from a large number of specified series, may be water-soluble or water-insoluble and may also be reactive dyes. The preferred polyfunctional compounds have the formula <FORM:0969306/D1-D2/2> in which the groups of formula I are derived from chloro-acetyl chloride and p-chloromethylbenzoyl chloride. The alkaline agent, dye or brightener and polyfunctional compound may be applied successively in any sequence but are preferably applied together possibly together with one or more dispersing agents and/or dyeing auxiliaries and/or printing auxiliaries. The polyfunctional compounds may be employed as solutions in a water-miscible solvent, e.g. dimethyl-formamide. Fixation may be achieved at room temperature or by steaming or dry heating at 30-200 DEG C. Examples of dyeing cotton and rayon staple fabrics are given.
