Abstract

969,233. Railway wheels. GRIFFIN WHEEL CO. May 23, 1961 [Dec. 5, 1958; June 6, 1960], No. 18616/61. Heading B7C. In a cast railway wheel wherein the web 14 connects into the hub 10 and the flanged rim 16 by curved fillets 40, 42, 44, 46, at least one of the fillets has a continuously varying radius of curvature, such as a parabolic or near parabolic form. All the fillets may have the same form of curvature. As shown, the web 14 is arcuate in cross-section with its centre line 30 intersecting the mid-plane of the hub at 32 and the centre of gravity 34 of the rim. The rim is offset to the outboard side of the mid-plane of the hub, and the fillets 40-46 extend further along the wheel web 14 than along the rim 16 or the hub 10.
